Predictions
At the core of gaming, there are three major contenders for console sales. One contender is Microsoft, which released the Xbox One in November 2013. This console was marketed as a complete entertainment system and remains valid today. It is considered to be the best home entertainment system by many sources. On another side, we have Sony, which released the Play Station 4 just a week before the Xbox One. The Play Station 4 has sold over 106 million units since its release with the Xbox One sitting at just over 46 million in comparison. While larger sales don't always mean a better product, the PS4 is often highlighted as the greater of the two consoles because it also offers a larger player base for online games and more console exclusive games than the Xbox One.
On the last side, we have Nintendo, which released the Nintendo Switch in March of 2017. The Switch has outsold the Xbox One with over 50 million sales and it has the largest number of console exclusive games. Nintendo's consoles generally follow a gimmick, with the Wii having motion controls and the Switch capable of playing on the go. Nintendo titles are so exclusive that it does not have the pure competition that Microsoft and Sony have, with the latter two having most games available on either platform. The Switch released less than three years ago, which means that a new console will not be coming in at the same time as Microsoft and Sony.
As for the battle between the two companies, it seems that things are taking a drastic change with the release of the Xbox X and the PS5.
If we are talking about the specs inside these consoles, the Xbox X appears to be a powerhouse. The console itself looks like a computer tower and offers Ray Tracing as well as using 12 teraflops in computational units. In layman's terms, Xbox X has the capacity to produce stunning visuals.
Sony is taking a different stride with the PS5 by requesting game developers' input on their console. While they will still have 8k games and the potential for 120 fps, but the larger idea for Sony is creating a console that can perform quickly. This means that the PS5 may be slightly inferior in graphics to the Xbox X, but it should perform much faster and make loading screens a thing of the past. The only thing Sony hasn't released is what the PS5 will actually look like, just the controller.
With the specs of each console given to the public, the real questions to ask are about the services provided. Microsoft announced that not only would the Xbox X be capable of playing every generation of Xbox games. Sony stated that the PS5 will play an overwhelming majority of the 4,000 PS4 games, yet it doesn't offer any timeframe as to when these would be available or if any of the other generations of console games will be available.
Yet one of the shining lights for the PS5 is the Play Station VR 2. The developers at Sony have released information on VR for the PS5 and have stated that they have created audio quality that will make you feel as though you are in the game itself. Microsoft currently doesn't have any product extension for the Xbox consoles that can compete with Play Station VR. This exclusiveness means that any console-based VR gameplay from YouTube content creators can only come from a PlayStation, offering free advertisement for Sony and the games available for its platform.
These two consoles will be released around Black Friday of this year. Both consoles offer an increased gaming experience compared to the generation behind them. Microsoft and Sony are now branching out in their services, further expanding the differences between the two consoles that typically play the same Triple-A titles, creating the same approach that has made Nintendo successful. The only true indicator we can have for the better console is after they are released to the public. All that remains is to keep an eye out for information being released as the release dates approach!
